There’s nothing better than a proper good roast dinner – and the best of the best in Britain is served in North Yorkshire, according to a new survey.
The popular Instagram account Rate Good Roasts have released their fifth annual Top 10 Sunday Roast list, and at the top spot is The Abbey Inn, in Byland, with a 97% rating.
The winning Abbey Inn is a country pub, set in the North York Moors, run by renowned chef Tommy Banks.
He reopened the pub with a brand new menu in May 2023.
Tommy Banks also runs the restaurant Roots York, which topped the Rate Good Roasts list in 2020.
Each year, the team at Rate Good Roasts travel up and down the country to find the best Sunday dinners in the UK (this sounds like the dream job!)
The team sample nearly 200 roasts before producing a yearly top 10.
Every dinner is reviewed against ten categories that make up a special Sunday lunch. These are meat, vegetables, sides, venue, drinks, value, potatoes, gravy, service and, of course, Yorkshire puddings.
Last year’s joint winners were The Hawthorn in Haworth, another Yorkshire venue, and Ducie Street Warehouse in Manchester.
An honourable mention for 2023 also went to the Star Inn The City, in York, which came joint 11th place at 87%.
Chief eating officer at Rate Good Roasts, Tom Casson, said. “There’s something romantic about a Sunday roast.
“It’s an event. Whether it’s an opportunity to see old friends or a family celebration of some kind. You don’t want to be let down. As an adult it almost feels like you’re going out, out on a Sunday.
“You want a stand out dish on the specials board – a lamb or a porchetta, and a creative main option for our veggie or vegan friends.
“Personally I want the Yorkshire puddings big enough to act as a vessel for the gravy. Potatoes need to be in that sweet Venn diagram spot of fluffy and crispy.”
