North Yorkshire Police have revealed how many fixed penalty notices it handed out to people flouting Covid regulations last month.
The force dished out 355 penalties between 2 December and 5 January:
- 194 to local residents
- 161 to visitors.
Of these
- 9 were for for outdoor gatherings
- and 334 for indoor gatherings.

York and Scarborough accounted for the vast majority of indoor gathering infringements, with 147 and 171 respectively.
In York 39 residents were fined for various infractions, while 115 penalties were issued to visitors.
We reported before Christmas how police had issued a ‘shocking’ number of Tier 3 fines in York city centre, mixing in larger than permitted groups from multiple households.
Today, Chief Inspector Rachel Wood urged people to respect the rules. “We are seeing infection rates rise and the impact of the virus and the new more transmissible strain is really being felt by our hospitals and healthcare colleagues.
“People are losing their loved ones to this virus every day.”
