North Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service put out a plea today, urging people to be careful this bank holiday weekend.
The post on Facebook offered advice to follow for those visiting the countryside and highlighted the damage and waste of resources that fires can cause.
The statement read: “Every year fire and rescue services respond to fires in the countryside that could easily have been prevented. These fires can tie up fire crews for hours, or sometimes days, and cause damage to wildlife habitats.
“We’re asking you to help us this weekend by following our advice to protect yourselves and our beautiful countryside.
“Dispose of cigarettes carefully, don’t leave glass bottles lying around and don’t light BBQs or campfires on or near to grass/moorland. If you spot a fire, call 999.”
