Nine-year-old Mollie spearheads drive to reduce plastic

28 Dec, 2018 by YorkMix

Mollie Nicholl and friends show Rachael Maskell how to make an ecobrick

Nine-year-old eco warrior Mollie Nicholl is leading the way in reducing our plastic waste.

Mollie, a pupil at Knavesmire Primary School is a champion of eco-bricks. By building these bricks out of unwanted plastic, you create something useful out of material that would otherwise be sent to landfill or end up polluting our oceans.

Mollie is hoping to encourage other people young and old to build eco-bricks.

So far she has engaged fellow pupils at both her school and Brownie club – and she got in touch with her MP Rachael Maskell to help her educate fellow constituents.

A brilliant iniative

Ms Maskell met with Mollie, who showed her how to make an ecobrick.

Ms Maskell said “This is not only a brilliant initiative but a fantastic way to help save plastics commodities from going into landfill and entering our oceans,” the York Central MP said, adding:

  • Mollie is a real inspiration and I will do all I can to support her in educating people to understand the challenges that we face in reducing the amount of plastic waste generated.

I have written to all the heads of schools to get them involved and intend to ask a question at the next environment questions.

For more information on how you can get involved, visit the Ecobricks website.
