Campaigners, business people, charity leaders and a certain football manager are among those from York and North Yorkshire to receive New Year’s Honours.
A total of 95 people from Yorkshire & Humberside have received honours in The King’s New Year Honours List 2025.
Harrogate-based former England manager Gareth Southgate is the most famous among them, as he is knighted.
Sir Gareth led England to two consecutive European Championship finals and the 2018 World Cup semi-finals, making him the most successful incumbent since Sir Alf Ramsey.
The 54-year-old, who left the role shortly after England’s defeat to Spain in the Euro 2024 final in July, becomes the fourth former England manager to receive a knighthood, after Ramsey, Sir Walter Winterbottom, and Sir Bobby Robson.
Sir Gareth declined to comment on the honour.
There’s also a knighthood for North Yorkshire Council’s corporate director for the children and young people’s service, Stuart Carlton.
He’s been awarded the honour for his work and dedication in a career spanning 35 years.
Mr Carlton, who joined the council in his current role in 2017, said he had been shocked but felt “extremely privileged” to be given the honour for services to children, young people and families.

He added: “I’m still in shock really, I just never expected that such a thing could happen. It’s a huge honour and I feel very humbled to receive it.
“Like all these awards, it’s built on a long career of service and the hard work and dedication of many other people that I have been truly privileged to work alongside. I thank each and every one of them.”
Several educationalists are honoured. Among them is Nigel Ashley, the chief executive officer of Elevate Multi-Academy Trust, who gets an OBE.
Businessmen and women also receive honours. Simon Spinks, the Selby-based chief executive of the Harrison Spinks Group bed manufacturer, is also made an OBE.
Volunteers, campaigners and charity workers are recognised too. MBEs go to Philip Benham – chair, Friends of the National Railway Museum; Joeli Brearley – founder of Pregnant Then Screwed; Rev Stephen Redman – a former chair and long-term volunteer at children’s cancer charity Candlelighters; and Fred Ring – co-founder of York Racial Equality Network
