A new Thai restaurant planned for York city centre could seat more than 200 diners.

Plans lodged with City of York Council showed Giggling Squid would seat 203 people across the ground and first floor of the vacant former Banks Musicroom store in Lendal.

The application from the Giggling Restaurants Ltd, the company behind the plans, stated the business would also offer takeaways with on-site staff accommodation also proposed.

It comes after an application to licence the restaurant for alcohol sales was lodged in June, following the approval of initial plans in May.

The council also approved an application to put the restaurant chain’s signage onto the building.

YorkMix revealed in February 2024 that Giggling Squid was going to take over the building.

The latest plans for the York restaurant showed there would be seats for 113 diners on the ground floor and 90 on the first.

Staff accommodation with three bedrooms, ensuite bathrooms and a shared kitchen would be installed in the second floor.

Giggling Squid was founded by husband and wife Andy and Pranee Laurillard, with the chain’s website stating that they wanted to bring the buzz of Thai mealtimes to the UK.

Launched in Brighton in 2002, it now has 50 restaurants across the UK.

They offer curries, noodles and pad thai, meat and seafood stir fries, along with several vegetarian and rice dishes.

Menus also include sharing platters and cocktails.

The company also has a restaurant in Harrogate and there are plans to open one in Leeds.

The opening date for the York restaurant is yet to be confirmed.

Banks Musicroom was the oldest music shop in the UK at the time of its closure in February 2023.

The business could trace its roots back to a shop which opened on Blake Street in 1756.
