Things are set to get spicy on one of York’s most popular streets from this weekend.
A new café and takeout specialising in Mexican food is set to open on Coney Street on Saturday (24 July).
Mariachi Tacos is based in the corner building at the junction with New Street. It was previously home to the EE phone shop, but remained empty for several years after it relocated.

“It’s going to be a fast food takeout, with further seats inside,” Mariachi Tacos owner Haydee Herrera told YorkMix.
“We’re going to start with burritos, tacos, nachos, quesadillas. So there’s a lot of different types of Mexican food that we’ll actually have there.”
Given Covid concerns, there will be just six seats for inside dining to start with.
Haydee, who’s originally from Los Angeles, is sure it will bring the authentic taste of Mexico to York city centre. “We’re Hispanic ourselves. We realised that we didn’t get that taste of Mexican taste in other places.
“So we’re hoping to provide the Mexican taste that we have!”

She said they were delighted with the property, which is in such a prominent location.
They expect to create a small number of jobs, with the potential to expand more if the café is a success.
It is also an historic venue. The building is Grade II* listed, and dates back to 1500, with some 18th century alterations.
The 460ft ground floor retail space was previously listed for rent at £50K per year, and the rateable value is £69K.
