A long empty shop unit is soon going to enjoy a new lease of life.
Number 10 Coppergate is about to become the latest branch of furniture shop sofa.com.
It will be only the seventh dedicated showroom for the online retailer to open in the UK – although it also sells through many House of Fraser stores.
As you’d expect, sofa.com sells sofas. But it also sells a wide range of other items, from beds to dining tables, office furniture to garden seats.
The move is an almost miraculous new start for a shop unit which has been vacant for most of the last 12 years.
Apart from a six month renaissance as home to record shop That’s Entertainment, it has been empty since 2009.

While the Coppergate Centre has had a good recent record for filling its units, Coppergate itself has struggled, with shops like Ryman and Oasis moving out.
In 2019, MTK Holdings Ltd applied for permission to turn the unit into a restaurant.
When sofa.com opens, it will have come full circle. One of the previous occupiers of the building was Sofa Workshop.
