A new shop is about to open on York’s most famous street – Shambles.
And this one has nothing to do with Harry Potter!
The shop is called Celtic Design. The Edinburgh-based business designs and sells silver jewellery inspired by Celtic history.
Celtic Design is opening at the Pavement end of Shambles. Number 27 Shambles has been through several incarnations recently.
It was the locally-owned Art Shop for many years. Then it became one of three shops on the street taken over by the Gold Brothers, a prominent Scottish retailing family with lots of souvenir stores in Edinburgh.

They were all Harry Potter themed. The World Of Wizardry opened in 2017, and was later renamed The Enchanted Galaxy after a copyright dispute over the Harry Potter brand with Warner Bros.
It closed in February 2022. Then it reopened as Hardy Feral, also a Gold Brothers brand. It sold cashmere and lambswool products, from sweaters to scarves to handbags. That shop closed last summer.
Although Celtic Design is another Edinburgh brand, its website describes the business as “independently owned”.
The website says the brand began in 1999 as a jewellery stand on the Royal Mile in the Scottish capital.
Their first shop opened in the city in 2014 followed by a second five years later.
“Our aim is to provide customers with the fine art of Sterling Silver jewellery, which not only carries an ancestral blueprint but is also locally inspired and available at reasonable prices,” the website says.
The business has been fitting out the Shambles shop over the last few weeks. They are also hiring a customer sales advisor – if you are interested drop off your CV in store or email [email protected].
