A new restaurant is set to open on a York street now teeming with foodie offerings.
Sasa Greek Food wants to move in to 7-9 Piccadilly, close to its corner with Pavement.
Most recently the building was the Piccadilly Café Bar and Escape Rooms.
Sasa Greek Food is currently based further down the street, as it is one of the popular options at Spark York.
On the Spark website, it says: “Sasa is a lovely family run business who offer comforting, traditional Greek street food. We have tried and tested and can indeed confirm – it’s tasty.
“Martin’s Greek roots and passion for food have blossomed into this unique venture and it’s truly inspiring to see the sheer effort and hard work which has been going into growing their brand. Souvlaki, soutzoukaki, baklava – they have it all. Rated delicious.”
According to the planning application now with City of York Council, Sasa’s proposals involve “a significant investment” in the building.
Both the first floor, previously the café bar, and the basement escape rooms would be turned into a restaurant.
“The proposal is relatively straightforward insofar as that there would be no alterations to the façade of the building, no increase in footprint and no changes to the internal layout,” planning documents say.
“The previous use means that the ground floor of the building will have main dining area, bar and open kitchen within the main floor space area.
“At the rear of the ground floor would be a pot wash and barrel store. The basement area will use the rooms to form a private dining and storage.”
The Piccadilly Café Bar and Escape Rooms began life as Rehab before a name change.
It was opened in 2019 by the same team behind the Habit on Goodramgate, and closed in February as the owners sought to put family first.
If planning permission is granted, it will be the latest Spark York-incubated business to move into its own bricks-and-mortar premises, following in the footsteps of the likes of Tasca Frango and Clucking Oinks.
And it’s another food option for Piccadilly, alongside Spark itself, Cresci Pizza, German Doner Kebab – and the opening this week of Pepe’s Piri Piri.
