A new restaurant is set to open in York after planners gave it the go-ahead.
As YorkMix revealed last year, plans were in to turn a former takeaway on Bishopthorpe Road into an “eat-in restaurant/bar”.
New accommodation was also part of the application.
Approval has just been granted for the scheme, at what was Rainbow House, the Chinese takeaway at 8 Bishopthorpe Road.
The proposal asked to change use on the ground floor to a restaurant/bar with outdoor seating in the rear yard, while the upper floors would change from being a flat to a two-bedroom short-term holiday let.
A new canopy over the outdoor seating would be added.
Planning officers supported the application subject to these conditions:
- the control and mitigation of cooking odours
- noise controls on the kitchen extraction flu and air conditioning units
- there should be no live or recorded music other than background music
- and that the use of the outside area should be restricted from midday to 9pm.

Two objections were received, with concerns about noise and bin storage and collection.
Seven comments comments came in support of the proposal.
In a report, planners said: “The proposed change of use to a restaurant/bar is considered a suitable use in this location, taking into account local plan retail policies, and will support the vitality and vibrancy of the existing centre.”
They said “no adverse effect on amenity for local residents is anticipated from the change from a private dwelling to a holiday let”.
The plans were approved on 2 May, with opening hours limited to 7am to 11pm Monday to Saturday, and 8am to 10pm on Sundays and Bank Holidays.
The outdoor area can only open between 10am to 9pm every day.
