Liz Truss must act quickly to help the people of York “struggling with housing, energy and food costs”.
So says the Labour MP for York Central, Rachael Maskell.
Ms Truss will take over from Boris Johnson as Prime Minister tomorrow, after she won the fight to be leader of the Conservative Party.
Ms Maskell has already written to Ms Truss. She said today (Monday): “The Prime Minister has a job to do.
“For as long as people in York are struggling with housing, energy and food costs, I will be on her heels to make her confront the realities that people across York face every day.”
“Countries like France, where they placed a 4% cap on energy costs have seen inflation at 6.1% and people there are able to live within their means.
“However this year the Tory Government has driven inequality, giving tax relief to the oil and gas tycoons, while expecting the people to pay for this through extortionate energy bills.
“I have also called on the Prime Minister to get inflation under control and ensure that wages, pensions and social security payments reflect the current economic reality.”

Paul Doughty, leader of the York Conservative Group, said he was delighted by Liz Truss’s victory.
” The process has been longer than I would have wished but thankfully this has been through parliamentary recess and it’s now time to crack on,” he said.
“She is clearly a determined character and I believe her no-nonsense style is just what we need for the country.
I was pleased to have attended the hustings that took place in Leeds and I was impressed with her grasp on issues that face the north of England as well as the country as a whole.
“I believe she has the ability to not only unite our party but more importantly, deal head on resolutely with the huge challenges we face in the country – the crisis we face with energy and the cost of living, continuing to stand up to the aggression shown by Russia in Ukraine which has deeply added to the energy challenge and to continue the recovery from the pandemic.”
For the Lib Dems, City of York Council leader Keith Aspden said: “I sincerely hope that the change in Conservative leadership will see the Government move away from the ridiculous political theatre that has taken place during Johnson’s premiership and focus on the serious issues facing the country.
“After months of bluster and promises, it’s time a real plan is unveiled to help people, public service providers and businesses in what is a national emergency.
“There are people facing destitution, businesses facing closures, schools facing staff cuts – we need action on the cost of living now – the planned rise in energy bills this October must be cancelled and a substantial support scheme must be rolled out.”
