New images of how the new restaurant set to open in York’s former Crown Post Office could look have been unveiled.

The Post Office in Lendal closed in 2019 after 135 years – despite more than 3,000 people signing a petition to keep the branch open.

Steakhouse chain Miller & Carter are to open a branch in the landmark building. A planning application to convert the building into a restaurant was approved this week.

Planning officers say the carved Post Office sign on the outside of the building and the war memorial plaques in the main entrance are to remain in place.

They add: “It is considered that the proposals will respect the special historic and architectural interest of the building and the character and appearance of the conservation area and would not erode the amenity of the occupants of nearby properties to an unacceptable degree.”

But fresh plans for Miller & Carter-branded signs on the outside of the property have been submitted.

The company has been approached for a comment on an opening date.
