There’s a new face at the helm of one of the world’s oldest schools.

Jeremy Walker has taken over as head of St Peter’s on Clifton.

Formerly principal of the King’s School in Rochester, Kent, he took charge of the 1,200-pupil St Peter’s, founded in AD627, on Wednesday (January 9).

He is impressed by the “wonderful programme of visiting speakers” lined up as part of York Literature Festival, and the school’s work in the community, saying:

  • I value the great work the school has done with its partner schools in the York Independent State School Partnership in offering academic challenge and opportunities for the most able students across the city, wherever they attend school.

I look forward to the masterclasses we will be hosting in March for hundreds of York pupils, and working with headteachers across the city and others in the community to ensure that the school continues to deliver benefit for all.

The appointment comes after St Peter’s was declared the North Independent School of the Year by the Sunday Times in November.

Jeremy enjoys many sports, music and the performing arts and is looking forward to the opportunity to pursue his interests in Yorkshire.

He is married to Harriet, and they have a son and a daughter, who will both be joining St Peter’s School in September 2019.

“My family and I were delighted to be able to move to York in time to celebrate Christmas,” he said.

“My wife, children and I have already enjoyed exploring the city, including one or two of its restaurants.

“It is a wonderful place to live and work and we intend to take full advantage of all that this great and beautiful city and region has to offer.”
