A new bar is due to open this summer – with a totally tropical flavour.
The Dum Dum Tiki Bar is now being fitted out on Swinegate in York city centre.
It is inside the premises occupied for 20 years by a fish and chip shop, first known as Mr Chippy then latterly rebranded as Hook & Line.
It closed in 2020 and has stayed empty ever since.
Now it is being transformed into the Dum Dum Tiki Bar by its owners, who also own the Vudu Lounge on the first floor of the same building.
One of the owners, Maria Pavlou, said there were too many empty units in York and they wanted to bring the empty business back to life.
A tiki bar is a colourful, tropical themed lounge bar. And while plenty of other cities have them, York doesn’t – but that will soon change.
“It will be something different – we don’t have a tiki bar in York. It’ll be a nice cocktail bar serving fancy drinks,” Maria said.

The bar would be decorated with brightly coloured wallpaper and include swing seats, she added.
Maria told YorkMix that they don’t have a definite opening date yet.
Meanwhile, The Vudu Lounge – which has been up and running for 18 years – is still going strong.
According to licensing documents, the Dum Dum Tiki Bar will operate as a completely separate premises, and customers won’t be able to access one bar from the other.
It will have a bar on the back wall with fixed seating along the perimeter walls. Between 60% and 70% of the space will be occupied by seating – with table service as well as bar service available.
The licensing application asks to open from 8am to 4.30am daily.
