Issued by City of York Council

City of York Council is making it easier for commuters, residents and visitors to navigate their way around York at a touch of a button, with the launch of three new bus and travel apps.

Available from all app stores: the YorkLIVE, Bus York and York Park & Ride are available to download for free now.

YorkLIVE provides live traffic and travel information, including where road works and road closures are taking place, how many available spaces are free in council car parks and live rail arrival and departure times.

BusYork helps bus users choose when and where to get their local bus service from. With live departure board times, route maps, specific bus information and service times listed alphabetically, plus live Twitter feeds from the council’s @York_Travel for the latest traffic and travel information.

York Park & Ride (P&R) provides live departure information, how many available car park spaces are free in all five P&R sites and detailed route maps. Plus, the function for people to save their “favourite stops” to access again and again.

Cllr Dave Merrett, Cabinet Member of Transport, Planning and Sustainability, said: “Tackling congestion and making it easier for people to travel in and around York is one of our key priorities. These apps are just some of the ways in which we’re providing better public transport options for local residents, daily commuters and visitors.”

Graham Titchener, programme manager for I-Travel York, said: “By giving people more choice about how they travel from A to B within York, we hope that they will look again at how they get around the city and make the right choice about the best, healthiest and most sustainable options for their journey.”

The apps were developed through funding from the Local Transport Fund and the Local Sustainable Transport Fund (LSTF), made possible by £4.6 million of government funding which the council successfully bid for in 2011.

Since the launch of the iTravel website a month ago, around a third of visitors to the site have accessed it using mobile devices.
