A new bar and restaurant could open in the premises of a former café in York city centre.
A company called MooMoo Steakhouse Ltd wants to open the venue at 8 Low Ousegate.
That was home to many years to the Bell’s Of York Café.
The café reopened after the first lockdown but then closed later in 2020.
MooMoo Steakhouse is now applying for an alcohol licence for a “ground floor bar/ restaurant and a first floor restaurant”.
Under the application it would open from 10am to midnight every day, with alcohol served the entire time.
One of the directors of MooMoo Steakhouse is Wael Mikhaiel, who has some fine form when it comes to eating out in York.
Mr Mikhaiel is a director of three other food businesses. Two are Italian restaurants – Silvano’s and Enoteca, and the third is the Middle Feast Shawarma takeaway on Lendal.
The Low Ousegate building targeted by MooMoo Steakhouse is a Grade II listed building dating back to 1810.
It would be the second new steakhouse planned for the area. The Rio Brazilian Steakhouse has revealed it is moving in to what was previously home to the Piccolino restaurant on Bridge Street.
Judging by the licensing committee’s decision to reject an application for the opening of The Alchemist in nearby Nessgate, the police and council are more likely to look positively on the licensing application if it is for a restaurant, rather than a bar and restaurant.
