If you’re raring to get fit in 2021, this may well be of interest.
Plans are now well advanced for a 24-hour gym to open near York city centre.
We reported just over a year ago on plans to turn the empty Office Outlet store on Foss Islands Road into a gym.
Submitted by fitness group PureGym, the application was approved by councillors last December.
Since then the property has been acquired by The Gym Group.
It is investing £1.4 million in the site, after signing a 15-year lease. And it has now revealed the branding planned for the new facility – and the pricing – ahead of its opening early in 2021.
‘High-spec equipment’

A 5,000 sq ft mezzanine floor is being added to the 10,000 sq ft ground floor.
The company promises “a large free weights area, functional training zones, free classes, and an array of high-spec equipment for cardio and strength training” at the York outlet.
There are two levels of membership. These are non-contract – you can cancel at any time:
- ‘Do It’ – £13.99 for three months, then £19.99 a month
- ‘Live It’ – £18.98 for three months, then £24.99 a month.

Entrance will be via a unique pin number at the entrance, and there will be free parking for gym users.
Altogether 12 jobs are being created, although these aren’t advertised on the company’s website at the moment.
Oliver Tester, the group’s head of property acquisition said: “York is a city where we have wanted to operate in for a long time, but until now we have not been able to find the right site in the right location with the appropriate deal.
“In agreeing this lease, we have benefited from the rapidly changing dynamics of the retail property market.”
