Na zdrowie! Polish Vodka Bar opens in York

If you love trying out drinks with barely intelligible names, then the Polish Vodka Bar is for you.

The Watergate Inn on Walmgate has gone for a radical change from its previous “traditional pub” transforming into a Polish Vodka Bar.

The owner decided to add to the growing international scene on Walmgate, inspired by his Polish wife. Opposite a bubble tea shop and mere doors away from Polish restaurant Barbakan, it seems right at home.

Opened today (Tuesday, 21 May), the Polish Vodka Bar is hoping to entice customers with drinks from the country, such as the famous Polish beer Tyskie and a large selection of vodka.

So it’s time to say ‘Na zdrowie!’ – ‘to health!’ – to York’s newest bar.

Among the spirits on sale is Bison Grass, featuring Zubrowka vodka with a bison grass flavour.

Wściekły Pies is also known as the Polish mad dog shot, and comes with raspberry juice and tabasco.

Or go multicoloured with the rainbow dash – seven colourful vodka shots.

It’s not all only Polish, though. You can expect Swedish ciders as well as Belgian, Italian, and Chinese beers, for a true international flavour.

And if you really want to play it safe, all your English drinks are there too.

Inside, the bar has been done up with newspaper clippings from the Second World War, transporting you to Warsaw, the Polish city completely ravaged by the war.

The beer garden at the Walmgate bar

No York bar would be complete without a beer garden, and the Polish Vodka Bar has one of the best – a sunny and secluded riverside space perfect for summer evenings.

Next week, the bar is planning to roll out a Polish food menu, featuring such delicacies as Polish Tripe soup, Polish sausage, and herring.

Mindful to the customers in its own inn, as well as local residents, the Polish Vodka Bar will be open 11am-11pm.
