Police have arrested a man on suspicion of murder after a young man died from serious injuries today (Tuesday, 26 December).

Yorkshire Ambulance Service went to Rosemary Court in Tadcaster after a person called reporting a man who was badly hurt.

The ambulance service called police at 7.20am.

A North Yorkshire Police spokesperson said: “Both officers and paramedics attended the scene and a short time later, a man in his 20s, was sadly pronounced dead. His next of kin has been informed.

“The area surrounding the scene is currently closed while our officers and specialist teams carry out enquiries and the initial investigation. Please avoid the area while this is ongoing.

“North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service are also supporting officers at the scene with specialist screening equipment to allow a thorough investigation to take place.”

Rosemary Court, Tadcaster

It has been reportedly locally as a stabbing, although police have not confirmed that.

If any of the following apply to you, and you have not yet spoken with officers, police ask you to call the Force Control Room on 101 as a matter of urgency, quoting reference 12230244233:

  • You witnessed the incident or the events surrounding it
  • You live or work in the area and your property is fitted with external CCTV, including video doorbells
  • You were driving through the area around the time of the incident and your car is fitted with a dashcam

Alternatively, if you wish to remain anonymous, the independent charity Crimestoppers can be contacted on 0800 555 111.

The police spokesperson said: “Although the investigation is in the early stages, we believe this is an isolated incident.

“We are asking people to refrain from speculating around the death of the man and to respect the privacy of his family and friends at this extremely difficult time.”

Local North Yorkshire Councillor Kirsty Poskitt spoke to YorkMix Radio:

“It’s not the news that anybody wants to wake up to, especially at this time of year.

“Devastating and just heartbreaking to hear.

“With this kind of incident, there’s always going to be a lot of speculation. There’s always going to be a lot of comments made on social media. I think the instant reaction from everybody is what about safety in the community.

“I understand that this is an isolated incident and no one is at risk. But I fully respect why everybody would be concerned about such a horrific incident happening in our community.

“If you are able to help the police with their enquiries. Please do!  If you heard anything, saw anything in the early hours of this morning get in touch with them.

“I’d just like to say that my thoughts go to the family and anyone else involved at this awful time.”
