A crash involving multiple vehicles has closed the A1M in North Yorkshire this afternoon (Sunday).

The road is shut between junction 51 Leeming Bar and junction 52 Catterick.

The accident was reported at about 2pm. Police and ambulance crews are at the scene.

There is no word on any casualties as yet.

Highways England has appealed for drivers stuck in the congestion to be patient. It says that traffic behind the collision is being released onto local roads as a diversion.

They expect the road to be clear by 4.30pm, with traffic returning to normal by 5.15pm.

The AA described the delays as ‘severe’, lasting 27 minutes, with an average speed of 5mph.
