It’s the end of an era – as York bookshop Fossgate Books will close its doors at the end of the year.
The much-loved bookshop on Fossgate has been trading for 30 years.
The closure was announced via a sign in the window and on social media.
Fossgate Books specialises in antiquarian and second-hand books – and offers a huge range covering two floors. It will close on 31 December 2022.
“This is a planned retirement after over 30 years as a bookseller here in York,” said owner, Alex Helstrip, via Facebook.
“I would like to offer my thanks to all my customers, past and present, who have contributed to the success of the shop over the years.”
Alex is an expert bookseller – when visiting Fossgate Books, he is always very helpful and genuinely interested in trying to find a book you are after.

This isn’t the final end of Fossgate Books though – as it aims to continue selling books online.
“This will be a new venture for me and so may take some time to get going,” said Alex.
Alex is also offering “help, advice and encouragement” to any budding bookshop owners – as he feels that his retirement will leave the city short of bookshops.
“It is a shame perhaps that there have been no younger aspiring booksellers out there to take up the slack,” he said.
“If there is anyone out there who thinks that running their own bookshop in York would be a nice way to earn a living, then I would urge you to consider it.”
