Get ready to become a part of Ariel’s world – as York Light Opera Company brings the beloved Disney’s The Little Mermaid to York next week.
Based on the classic 1989 Disney animated film, The Little Mermaid tells the enchanting story of Ariel, a mermaid who dreams of trading her tail for legs and exploring the human world. Ariel strikes a bargain that will change her life forever – but all is not what it seems…
Disney’s The Little Mermaid is at York Theatre Royal from Wednesday 7 to Saturday 17 February 2024.
Described as ‘technically spectacular’, the show will round out York Light’s 70th-year celebrations.
It is directed by Martyn Knight with musical direction from Paul Laidlaw and additional toe-tapping choreography by Rachael Whitehead.
It features a talented cast of local performers, including Monica Frost as Ariel, Ryan Addyman as Flounder, Jonny Holbek as Sebastian, Pascha Turnbull as Ursula, and Rory Mulvihill as King Triton.
“We are incredibly excited to bring Disney’s The Little Mermaid to the York stage,” said director Martyn Knight. “This is a timeless story that has captivated audiences for generations, perfect for all the family, and we can’t wait to delight you all this half term.”
Audiences can look forward to all the iconic musical numbers, such as ‘Under the Sea’, ‘Part of Your World’, ‘Poor Unfortunate Souls’, and ‘Kiss the Girl’ – and promises to be an enchanting experience for all ages.

York Light Opera Company, with York Theatre Royal, ran a poster competition for primary school pupils in the York area – where children were invited to design a poster for the show.
The four winners, who’s posters were chosen by the show’s Ariel and Eric, will be displayed inside the York Theatre Royal and in the programme.
There will also be fancy dress competition opportunities for audience members during both performances on Sunday 11 February, and the Wednesday 14 and Thursday 15 matinées.
If you are attending the show and would like to be entered into the fancy dress competition, please email [email protected] with your name and the show you’re visiting.
Tickets for Disney’s The Little Mermaid start from £15 and are available via the York Theatre Royal website.
