There are plans to improve the safety of a York bridge at night.

Labour councillors in York say Network Rail and City of York Council are now finally working on a plan to make a footbridge over the East Coast Main Line, south of York Station and Holgate Bridge, safer by putting in proper lighting.

The bridge that links Barbara Grove and Love Lane is known locally as Dicky Bridge and while it’s a popular short cut in the daytime, at night it’s a different matter.

It’s really dark and the approaches are narrow on both sides. The arguments over what to do to make it feel safe to use during darkness have been rumbling on for three years now.

Holgate ward councillor Kallum Taylor said: “People actively avoid using it at night.

“Getting Network Rail and the council to take the matter seriously has been a challenge but we are getting there.”
