A police officer was cut out of the wreckage by North Yorkshire and Humberside firefighters and taken to hospital with serious injuries.
Two of the four occupants of the Seat, all male, were out of the car when emergency services arrived. Fire crews cut free the two still trapped, and they were taken to hospital.
West Yorkshire Police said officers attempted to stop a vehicle on the M62 eastbound as it entered the Humberside area at 11.24pm on Friday night.
The force said there was a collision between the car and two police vehicles, adding that one of the police vehicles left the carriageway and was in collision with a bridge stanchion.
“A police officer suffered serious leg injuries as a result and he was taken to hospital where he remains in a serious but non-life threatening condition,” police said.
Four people from the non-police vehicle were arrested and remain in custody.
Three of them were injured – one suffered neck and back injuries and two others suffered minor injuries.
Police said the Independent Office for Police Conduct has been notified.
Photographs shared on social media show a police car having left the road and crashed on the central reservation embankment.
Several fire engines and ambulances, along with police vehicles, went to the scene. At least two other cars are badly damaged.
There are reports that the police car crashed while in pursuit of another vehicle.
Humberside Police tweeted today: “Please be aware that the M18 North heading towards the M62 North and M18 North heading towards the M62 West, Langham Intersection, the road is currently closed. Please avoid the area where possible.”
Drivers were trapped for seven hours while the incident was ongoing. All trapped traffic has now been released.
The road was due to reopen around lunchtime. Diversions are in place.
