There’s a new addition to York’s Mexican food scene – as Deadly Venoms launches at Spark this weekend.
Chef Harry Johns and his team, previously Holy Mountain Kitchen, have reinvented themselves to start serving up delicious Mexican food from this Saturday, 20 May.
Deadly Venoms will be cooking up burritos, tacos, and nachos – in five different flavour variations.
Regarding the rebrand to Deadly Venoms, Harry explained “I was excited to cook a more ‘summery’ menu as the roof of Spark came off for summer. When Dogs Nose Vegan Burritos left Spark it was just great timing!
“My vocation is based in Mexican cooking having spent time living and cooking in Mexico City and Guadalajara in the past.”
The menu and flavours are “traditional Mexican”, with slow cooked meats and veggies – with the exception of the all day brunch burrito, which features gooey cheese, hash browns, eggs and smoked bacon.
There are five different ‘styles’ to choose from: Scorpion, Centipede, Lizard, Toad, and Snake.
The concept is inspired by Harry’s favourite Kung Fu film ‘Five Deadly Venoms’.
“It seemed trite to put candy skulls and Mexican iconography everywhere, and the five styles of food idea came from the five characters in the movie I love!”
‘Scorpio style’ features slow cooked beef shin, with Mexican beer and chipotle peppers, and ‘Centipede style’ is grilled halloumi with white cabbage slaw and pickled chillies.
And people are already excited by it. “The reception has been great,” Harry said. “Eating garlic and lime soft tacos in the sun at Spark? What’s not to love?”
