News, Things to do

York Castle Museum’s famous Victorian street, Kirkgate, is once again being transformed for a traditional Christmas experience.

Visitors will be able to wander down the snow-covered cobbles and immerse themselves in the joys of a Victorian Christmas – with seasonal shops, wintery workshops, and visits from the big man himself.

Christmas at York Castle Museum runs from Thursday 16 November to Sunday 5 January.

The shops on Kirkgate will be wreathed in festive greenery, with seasonal objects on display to take you back to Christmases past. The sleigh will be the perfect setting for a seasonal photo, and there will be workshops for both children and adults to craft your own decorations and wreath making.

There will be several performances on the Victorian street throughout the festive period too. Enjoy traditional musical entertainment from Victorian carol singers every Monday, as well as additional performances from musical miscreant duo, The Ran Tanners, who play traditional music of Georgian and Victorian England using fiddles, bagpipes and squeezeboxes.

Storycraft Theatre will be delivering seasonal storytelling specially for under 5’s, and an immersive performance of Charles Dickens’ beloved tale A Christmas Carol will take place on selected dates.

And, of course, Christmas wouldn’t be complete without a visit from Santa. On Saturdays and selected weekdays leading up to the big day, as well as on Christmas Eve, a traditional Green Father Christmas will be wandering the Victorian street.

Green Father Christmas, a per tradition, will be talking of feasts, games, dancing and songs – and bringing joy wherever he goes.
