A man who died when his car left the A64 and hit a tree has been named.
Wayne Kristian Powell, 51, was pronounced dead after the crash, near Crambeck between York and Malton, at 3.30am on Wednesday, 22 January.
An inquest into Mr Powell’s death was opened in Northallerton by North Yorkshire coroner Jonathan Leach today (Tuesday).
Crash location
Mr Leach said Mr Powell failed to stop for police. Then, while travelling on the A64, “he’s believed to have lost control of the vehicle and collided with a tree to the offside of the carriageway”.
He was “ejected from the vehicle”, the coroner said.
The provisional cause of death was given as neck injuries.
Mr Powell, who was single, was born in Dewsbury and lived in the Morley area of Leeds.
Previously North Yorkshire Police said that one of their vehicles had attempted to stop the red Vauxhall Corsa driven by Mr Powell before the crash.
Because of this involvement the force had referred itself to the Independent Office for Police Conduct.
The inquest was adjourned to a date to be fixed.
