Man suffers serious injuries in street attack

A man is in hospital with serious injuries after being attacked in York city centre.

Police were alerted to a report of an assault on Gillygate at 5.45am today (Wednesday October 24). A man was taken to York Hospital with serious injuries.

Gillygate was closed and other areas of the city centre cordoned off by investigating officers. They have since been reopened.

A North Yorkshire Police spokeswoman said:

  • It is unknown at this stage how the injuries happened.

    Police enquiries have found that the victim first encountered the suspect at around 3am near Bar 1331 and VUDU lounge in York city centre. At 5.45am the couple again encountered the suspect on Bootham, where the assault took place.

    The suspect is described as a white male, approximately 6ft of medium build wearing dark clothing.

    Police are appealing to anyone who witnessed the incident, the suspect or the couple making off in the direction of Bootham to contact them.

    They are also appealing to passing motorists who were in the area who may have capture dash-cam footage of the incident, to contact them.

Major investigation



Gillygate was shut in both directions for several hours. There was also a cordon on the pavement running along St Leonard’s Place, from its junction with Museum Street, past the York Theatre Royal and to the De Grey Rooms.

Two police vans were also parked outside the De Grey Rooms.
