Panto fans are ready for a few surprises when they go to see a Berwick Kaler show at York Theatre Royal.
But one theatre goer got the shock of her life when she went to see Aladdin And The Twankeys on Friday, January 24.
Caroline Gibson from Melton Mowbray in Leicestershire thought her trip to York and the pantomime was to celebrate her 50th birthday.
But boyfriend Ian Watts had another motive for the visit.
With a little help from legendary panto dame, writer and director Berwick, Ian proposed to Caroline on stage in front of 600 in the audience.
Oh no he didn’t. Oh yes he did!
Caroline, who turns 50 on Sunday, was delighted to accept his proposal.
“I didn’t have a clue Ian was going to ask me to marry him let alone do it from a stage in York during a pantomime.
“What a lovely birthday present and more than I could wish for. I can honestly say I will remember this day forever and for the record my answer was yes.”
Ian, 47, said: “If you asked me how I was feeling 24 hours ago I would have said extremely nervous but now I can honest say that I am the happiest man in the world.
“I’m delighted my beautiful wife-to-be said yes and cannot wait to start planning our wedding. I’d also like to thank the staff and Berwick Kaler for all their help and that was definitely the best pantomime experience of my life.”
