A 20-year-old man was killed after the car he was driving left the road and crashed into an embankment last night (Monday).
His passenger, a woman aged 19, suffered serious injuries.
Police are now asking anyone who saw the incident, between York and Harrogate, to get in contact.
A member of the public called police at 10.35pm last night (Monday) to report a car that had left the A59 between Moor Monkton and Green Hammerton.
They discovered a Skoda Octavia in the embankment at the side of the road.
Road ambulances and the Yorkshire Air Ambulance went to the incident.
A North Yorkshire Police spokesperson said: “Sadly, the 20-year-old driver was pronounced dead at the scene.
“His family have been informed and are receiving support from specially trained officers.

“The passenger in the vehicle, a 19-year-old woman, remains in a serious condition in hospital.”
The road was closed until around 11.10am today (Tuesday) to allow for collision investigation work and recovery to take place.
