One of York’s top attractions had to shut abruptly yesterday (Wednesday).

Jorvik Viking Centre closed after the famous ride broke down due to a leak.

Visitors being taken around the recreated Viking city told how they had to leave the ride when it came to a stop.

This morning it was reported that it was open as normal and they were looking forward to seeing you all today. A spokesperson added “Thanks for your patience.”

Earlier YorkMix reported that one visitor commented: “We had to get off when it broke down but the staff were brilliant. Really hoping we can come back tomorrow.”

A notice posted to the Jorvik website and social media explained the problem occurred when water leaked into the museum.

It says: “Due to an ongoing water leak from a neighbouring property, Jorvik Viking Centre is temporarily closed.

“We currently hope to reopen at some point tomorrow (Thursday 10 August), and will continue to share updates on our website and across our social media channels.

“We will be in touch with ticket holders affected by the closure. We apologise for any disappointment due to factors beyond our control.”

Talking to YorkMix Radio, Jorvik spokesperson Jay Commins said: “This is obviously going to be disappointing for people who had planned visits to Jorvik Viking centre.

“We’ve got our team working hard to rectify the problem, which is due to water ingress from a neighbouring property.

“Due to the complicated electrical systems within Jorvik, we have to make sure that any water is dried up before we start testing the ride again.

“We’re hoping that we’re open at some point later on during the day on Thursday. We’re going to be posting notifications on our website and our social channels just to keep people updated.”

Although frustrating, the leak is as nothing compared to the water problem Jorvik had eight years ago.

The Viking Centre was closed for 18 months after it was inundated with half a metre of water during the December 2015 floods.

When it reopened, the attraction was very much new and improved.
