An historic riverside building is set for a modern makeover 150 years after it opened.
The Bonding Warehouse, by the River Ouse, was built in 1875 for the storage of taxable goods when the city was a commercial port.
Now though it is going to come bang up to date with spaces for digital businesses and a podcast studio.
Patch Places Ltd, a company registered in Norwich, is taking over two floors of the warehouse previously occupied by tech firm Anaplan, which moved its York offices to Artemis House on Eboracum Way.
Patch says the deal is worth £900,000 and the new venture will open in January.
It will include coworking spaces and offices for up to 50 people, alongside areas for community and cultural uses.
Designed to complement the original interior, which features vaulted brick ceilings and large windows, the area will have ergonomic chairs and electric standing desks.
There will also be a studio for producing podcasts.
When fully occupied, Patch is expected to host more than 50 companies and approximately 400 co-workers.
Prices start at
- £24 per month for drop-in membership – eight hours a month
- £89 per month for one day a week
- £209 per month for unlimited access to coworking studios
- £319 per month for a dedicated desk.
Chief executive of Patch Freddie Fforde said: “Our mission is to establish Patch as York’s leading destination for startups and small businesses.
“Housed within the historic Bonding Warehouse, Patch is poised to become a vibrant hub for entrepreneurs, creatives and community builders.”
He said that Patch was “working in collaboration with the City of York Council to bring new use to the Bonding Warehouse”.
Cllr Pete Kilbane, the council’s executive member for economy and culture, said: “I am thrilled with the news that Patch has selected York for the new co-working, innovation and community hub, and that our inward investment team, with partners, have been able to support in getting this established in our city.”
Patch is also hiring staff for its York venue. Roles include a senior site director (salary £40K-£55K) and a community and events executive (£26K to £27K).
