Emergency services are on the scene of a major fire at a York store.

The blaze is at the B&M store at Clifton Moor. Firefighters, police and ambulance crews are at the scene.

Smoke has been billowing from the fire, which started in a storage yard next to the shop. The store and the area around it have been evacuated.

Residents of Clifton, Rawcliffe, Haxby and Wigginton areas have been asked to keep windows and doors shut.

“The smoke caused by the fire at Clifton Moor is being treated as potentially toxic,” said police.

The smoke has been causing driving problems. Police have closed a sections of the A1237 York outer ring road.

A North Yorkshire Police spokeswoman said:

  • Police are currently at the scene of a fire in the storage yard of the B&M store on Clifton Moor, York.

The area around the store has been evacuated and the A1237 ring road between Wigginton roundabout and the Tesco roundabout is currently closed to allow emergency services to attend the scene.

Smoke is drifting across the A1237 road and causing hazardous conditions. Motorists are advised to avoid the area.

Residents in the area are advised to stay indoors and close all windows while emergency services deal with the fire.

North Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service sent ten pumps, two aerial ladder platforms, two water bowsers and a high volume pump to tackle the blaze.

A Yorkshire Ambulance Service spokeswoman said that although staff attended the scene as a precaution, no one has been admitted to hospital.
