A major water main burst that was ‘affecting a huge area of York’ has been fixed.
Originally in a tweet the company said the ruptured pipe is in the YO32 postcode. There is certainly a burst main near Wyre Pond off The Village in Haxby.
But it now looks like the bigger burst was in the YO26 postcode – which reaches from Acomb and Poppleton to Great Ouseburn.
We asked Yorkshire Water for a specific location, but they didn’t get back to us.
A company spokesperson told YorkMix: “We had a burst on one of our 18-inch mains in YO26 this morning – which impacted water supplies across a number of areas in York.
“We’re working on a fix and have isolated the issue, which means that water supplies should return to normal soon.”
Later, the website was updated to say the incident had been resolved.
Large numbers of homes and businesses were affected for several hours. People reported little or no water in areas from Acomb to near York Racecourse to Bishopthorpe to Haxby.
Yorkshire Water said earlier: “We’re aware of the issue and would like to apologise for the inconvenience caused.
“We’re really sorry but customers may have low pressure or no water because of a burst water main.
“We’re working hard to get your water supply back to normal as soon as possible.
Got information or pix of the leak?
“Once it’s fixed, your water may be cloudy or discoloured – you can clear this by running your tap for a few minutes.”
One resident said on Twitter: “Affected here in Acomb with low water pressure. Some in neighbouring houses have none though after having low water pressure so probably got none now lol.”
As to why it’s affecting such a large area, “it could be that the burst is affecting our Water Pumping Stations also,” Yorkshire Water said on Twitter.
