Firefighters have been tackling a blaze in Norton this afternoon (Friday, 13 June).

Residents reported hearing loud bangs, and then a plume of black smoke filled the sky.

One local reported on Facebook: “It smelled like burning rubber, and three explosions!” The smoke was visible for miles around.

A North Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service spokesperson told YorkMix they were called at 1.17pm to reports of a tractor on fire on Park Road in Norton.

The vehicle owner called in the fire, and had attempted to tackle it himself.

Firefighters told him to stay away from the blaze as they dealt with it.

Flames had spread to a pile of tyres, which accounted for the plume of thick black smoke.

The fire is now out. No one was hurt.
