Thirty-five pigs died after the lorry that was carrying them was involved in a crash on the A59.

The crash happened at the roundabout between the A59 and the A1237 Boroughbridge Round at 10.20am on Thursday (November 6).

One of the lorries, carrying 200 live pigs, overturned. Two vets and officers from the RSPCA were at the scene alongside the police and fire brigade.

Thirty-five of the pigs died in the accident or were put down at the scene.

The road was closed and diversions put in place while emergency services dealt with the incident.

Fire appliances from Acomb and York, along with the heavy rescue unit from Tadcaster, were at the scene.

Any witnesses to the collision are asked to call North Yorkshire Police on 101, select option 1 and pass information to the Force Control Room.
