A company that plastered advertising posters across York has been fined in court.
Lots of the posters appeared on traffic lights and lampposts between July and October last year.
They were advertising Oakwood Resorts Ltd based at Newton on Derwent.
The company had not asked the council’s permission to display the posters which were A1 in size, or about 60 x 84 centimetres.
City of York Council sent warning letters, followed by ten fixed penalty notices, to Oakwood Resorts. All were ignored.
The council then prosecuted the firm.
No one from Oakwood Resorts turned up at York Magistrates’ Court for the hearing on 7 March.
In their absence, the firm was found guilty of fly posting. It was issued with a fine of £2,500, a surcharge of £1,000 and costs of £1,921 – a total of £5,421.
Cllr Michael Pavlovic, executive member for safer communities at City of York Council, said: “Putting up adverts on council property without permission is a criminal offence.
“It risks obscuring important information, blocking road users’ sight lines, damaging council property and cleaning it up diverts council resources.”
There’s information on how to legally display posters on this council web page.
