Volunteers have been praised for their work to clear the snow from the Askham Bar Covid-19 vaccination centre in York.

The teams have ensured the centre remains operation today.

Centres in Ripon and Harrogate have had to close because of the bad weather.

Security staff from Eboracum spelled out the perfect message too, creating ‘NHS’ in the snow.

‘Don’t head out to go sledging, it breaks Covid rules’ warn police

It’s been snowing, school’s out for most – and so thoughts turn to sledging.

But there is a stark message from police today: Don’t head out to sledging spots, it’s against the rules.

The Selby Neighbourhood Policing Team posted this on Facebook: “We know the sight of the lovely snow is really attractive but please do not head to locations to go sledging!

“We have already had several families attend Brayton Barff which in turn has created a gathering in breach of Covid regulations and travelling to this location for this purpose is a non essential journey.

“We promise we are not killjoys but it’s really important you follow the guidance and stay home. What better day to stay warm and toasty inside!”

Not everyone was impressed by the instruction. “I’m all for following the rules, but surely a daily walk, and taking a sled to keep kids happy that can’t do anything else, really isn’t all that bad… supermarkets are bloody worse!” said one mum.

But others understood – one said: “The hospitals don’t need any further admissions with broken bones either.”

Yellow warning of rain for York and North Yorkshire

A typical Met office snow warning map

Well, here’s some cheery news. The snow has actually stopped in York – but heavy rain is forecast.

There’s a yellow warning for rain issued by the Met Office between 6pm today and midday on Thursday.

“Heavy rain, with some snow melt at first, probably leading to some flooding and travel disruption,” is the warning, which covers both York and North Yorkshire.

It comes as the River Ouse in York is well below flood levels at 1.58m. But it is set to start slowly climbing tomorrow (Wednesday).

Here’s the weather forecast for the York.

This just in from North Yorkshire Police: “Otley Road in Harrogate at Harlow Hill is currently impassable due to snow.

“Motorists are urged to avoid the area until further notice. Listen to local radio for the latest traffic and travel information.”

Lots of disruption on Northern Rail

There are ‘cancellations to services on all routes’, reports rail operator Northern.

It says: “Due to severe weather conditions across the network the followiing routes are affected:

  • Leeds – Manchester Victoria/Chester/Blackpool North
  • Due to multiple trees on the line in the Sowerby Bridge area services are unable to operate in both directions. A limited number of road replacement vehicles have been requested to operate between Halifax and Rochdale, this is subject to road conditions being safe enough to operate.”

There’s a lot more on their live update page here.

Bus services disrupted

Several routes have been closed or suspended this morning. But First York reports everything is going to plan…

Pickering: The bridge on The Ropery is currently closed. Service 128 will have to serve the stops on The Ropery in the opposite direction to normal. Services towards Scarborough will pick up at the Helmsley stop and services towards Helmsley will pick up at the Scarborough stop.
