One of Britain’s golden age of steam icons will be returning this Spring.

The North Yorkshire Moors Railway will welcome back No. 60007 Sir Nigel Gresley for a selection of special services throughout March.

The steam locomotive will be in action between Pickering and Grosmont on various dates, offering passengers the chance to ride behind one of the world’s most legendary locos.

Sir Nigel Gresley is a prominent member of the LNER A4 Pacific class, designed by the celebrated railway engineer Sir Nigel himself.

Built at Doncaster works, Sir Nigel Gresley (originally No. 4498) entered service in 1937, following a naming ceremony at Marylebone station on 26 November that year.

It was the 100th Gresley Pacific built by the London and North Eastern Railway.

The locomotive was mainly based at London King’s Cross, with a spell at Grantham during World War II.

There, it was briefly re-numbered as No. 7, before becoming No. 60007 when the LNER was merged into British Railways.

Nick Simpson, Head of Mechanical Engineering at the NYMR, said: “Sir Nigel Gresley is not just a locomotive; it’s a masterpiece of engineering that represents an era of innovation and national pride.

“We are delighted to have this iconic engine back at the NYMR, allowing visitors to witness its power firsthand as part of our Railway 200 celebrations.”

These celebrations mark 200 years since the birth of the modern railway in the UK.

Alongside the visiting locomotive, this year’s festivities will feature The 200 Trail and Railway 200 Special Pullman Dining services.

Each day of the Sir Nigel Gresley services, two round-trips will operate between Pickering and Grosmont.

  • Service 1 will depart Pickering at 10:30 am and return from Grosmont at 12pm
  • Service 2 will depart Pickering at 1:30 pm and return from Grosmont at 3.10pm.

The schedule ensures passengers plenty of time to enjoy the journey, as well as the beautiful scenery along the heritage line.

Tearooms at Pickering and Grosmont Stations will be open for refreshments, and passengers are also able to choose from the onboard buffet bar.

The dates for the Sir Nigel Gresley services are as follows:
