A top café chain is planning to open a large new coffee shop in York city centre.
Caffe Nero is set to move into 5 Spurriergate, close to the corner of High Ousegate.
It was formerly home to Utopia Womenswear. A Utopia spokesperson told YorkMix the Spurriergate unit was set to become a coffee shop when its shop relocated to the Coppergate Centre.
A planning application on behalf of Caffe Nero says: “This property is currently unoccupied. Our proposal is to refurbish where needed and redecorate the interior and alter the shopfront and signage for use by Caffe Nero.
“A Caffe Nero is a place where customers can grab a coffee or snack while feeling assured and comfortable with a well known recognisable brand.
“Given the size and scale of the property the proposed design achieves a functional aesthetically appealing solution without being detrimental to the building its housed within.
“The proposed entrance and counter arrangement allows free flow past the serving unit whilst giving customers access to purchase beverages and food.”
Plans include a new double door lobby, a new shopfront with aluminium window frames, and both an illuminated sign and a hanging sign.
There are already three Caffe Nero outlets in York city centre, one on King’s Square, one in the Coppergate Centre and another on Davygate.
