The new name for a well-known York pub has been revealed.
Number 3 Museum Street has been known as Thomas’s almost continuously since it opened in 1861.
Now though, it has a new name: Museum Street Tavern, as these pictures show.
Thomas’s closed in March 2022. The then management team posted on Facebook: “The building will soon be undergoing refurbishment and having a major rebrand and will reopen some time this year with new management.
“We’d like to thank all customers for your support and wish you all the best. From the team at Thomas’s.”
Thomas’s belongs to Unique Pub Properties after ownership was transferred to the firm by the Inntrepreneur Pub Company in 1999.
Last March, Unique’s affiliated company the Stonegate Pub Group applied to turn the pub into a Be At One Cocktail Bar.
A planning application said the outside would be redecorated. And while the interior would be remodelled, no significant structural changes would take place.
However, that application was withdrawn in February. But clearly a different rebrand is now underway.
Thomas’s Hotel was opened in 1861 by the hotelier William Thomas, and was then owned by a brewer called Thomas Lightfoot, before it became a John Smith’s pub in 1900.
It was later known as Thomas’s Bar. In 2010, it looked to have been lost as a pub, when the building was converted into a Mexican restaurant called Mojitos, but it returned to pub use and its old name just over a year later.
However, the name will live on – the words ‘Thomas’s Hotel’ are visible in moulded lettering above the door.
As it is a Grade II listed building, this can’t be changed.
There is no word yet as to when the Museum Street Tavern will open. We’ve asked the Stonegate Pub Group for more details and will update when we get them.
