Issued by City of York Council

City of York Council is taking a lead on a Keep Britain Tidy and The Dogs Trust campaign to help get to the bottom of dog fouling in public areas.

To make sure residents don’t fall foul of the law and receive a dirty great fine the council is helping to raise awareness of the health risks it can cause including toxocariasis.

To help spell out the problem in the area, Westfield Primary School will be holding a poster competition for its pupils. The winning design will be made into signs to discourage dog fouling in the area.

The council will also be joining forces with the Foxwood Residents’ Association to make it clear that dog fouling is unacceptable and that £50 fixed penalty notices will be given to those who fall foul of the law.

Cllr David Levene, Cabinet Member for Environmental Services, said: “Dog fouling is one of residents’ pet hates, and I am keen to make it crystal clear to people who allow their dog to foul in public areas that they will be issued with a fixed penalty fine.Working with the community to keep streets clean and safe is part of helping create a Smarter York.”

Smarter York aims to help maintain a clean, green and safe environment for York. The initiative encourages and works with residents to create attractive neighbourhoods with a real sense of community and to tackle the things that can spoil our neighbourhoods for example littering or dog fouling.

The council are responding to complaints and monitoring problem areas, if anyone wants to report a problem area they can contact the council via the Customer Contact Centre on York 551551 or by email.
