Top Gear host turned celebrity farmer Jeremy Clarkson has launched his own vodka – and it’s stocked exclusively at a York bar.
Jeremy Clarkson’s documentary series Clarkson’s Farm on Amazon Prime Video documents his attempt to run a 1,000-acre farm in the Cotswolds.
Viewers know he sells a variety of produce in his Diddly Squat farm shop – and his latest offering is an alcoholic drink, ‘Cow Juice Vodka’.
And it is stocked in just one bar in the country – Plonkers, on Cumberland Street in York.
How did they get such an amazing deal? Simply by asking!
“Our owner Steve Wood was on holiday and started watching the programme with his kids,” explained Plonkers manager Jo Ayrton.
“He fell in love with it, and started to look at what they were doing and thinking how they were really supportive of independent businesses and how we could work together.”
So Steve reached out to them – “quite boldly, really” – and asked if they would like to stock Cow Juice Vodka in York at Plonkers, as an independent wine bar.
They agreed, and after some back and forth Plonkers received their first stock in mid-March.
“They hadn’t actually supplied anyone yet, so we are the first place that is stocking it as a product to sell which is really exciting.”
Unique and eye-catching
The Cow Juice Vodka is distilled from whey, which is also used in protein drinks, and according to the product description on the online shop is ‘the greenest of all green mile vodka out there’.
“It’s been selling really well,” said Jo. “It comes in quite a unique bottle so it’s quite eye-catching.
“A lot of people have watched the programme so people are always interested to try it – even people that wouldn’t order a vodka, once they’ve heard one of us talking about it they’ll have a go.
“It’s very smooth, it doesn’t leave a burn or anything. It tastes more like a premium vodka.”
The Cow Juice Vodka is now Plonkers’ house vodka, and it’s £4.50 for a shot. The vodka will be stocked at Plonkers until at least October, but there’s no plans to stop supplying it – so you’ve got plenty of time to give it a try.
“To be able to try it locally in Yorkshire rather than having to go down to Oxfordshire to try it, that’s quite special.”
Online a 50cl bottle of Cow Juice Vodka retails for £39.
Plonkers hope to work with the Diddly Squat Farm Shop again in the future.
“I think they’re thinking of bringing out a gin at some point, and if so we’d love to be able to stock that as well.
“They’ve been lovely to work with because they’ve kind of promoted us – social media wise it’s blown up massively. So hopefully we’ll keep working with them.”
And hopefully the man himself Jeremy Clarkson might pay them a visit!
