A York cleaner who covertly made recordings of naked women and children has been jailed for three years and two months.

Daniel Winteringham, 35, of Sutherland Street, York, was sentenced today (Friday) after pleading guilty to 15 charges.

These included voyeurism, taking and making indecent videos and still images of children, possessing extreme pornography, and perverting the course of justice.

The indecent images of children were largely recordings made by himself but also included material downloaded from the internet.

Winteringham’s offending came to light after a young girl saw him photographing her in a state of undress and alerted her parents, York Crown Court heard.

Police launched an investigation. After seizing a number of devices from him, digital forensic investigators discovered multiple videos and still images of females who he had secretly recorded in various states of undress after placing cameras in their homes.

There were also thousands of covert recordings of women and girls who were fully dressed and in public.

Officers also found on his devices extreme pornographic images involving animals, which he had downloaded from the internet.

Winteringham was first charged with some of the offences in October 2022.  While he was on court bail for these offences, Winteringham asked one of the victims to lie to the police for him, offered her cash and harassed her when she refused.

For that he was charged in February 2023 with perverting the course of public justice, in addition to other offences.  He had been remanded in custody since February 2023.

Investigating officer Detective Constable Alastair Foy of York CID, said: “Winteringham photographed and videoed women and girls without their knowledge, including inside their own homes.

“He committed terrible breaches of trust and violated their safe spaces.

“As the judge said, Winteringham’s actions were outrageous, disturbing and unforgivable, and his personal circumstances do not extinguish his culpability.  He knew what he did was wrong.

“Each of his victims and their families have been seriously impacted by his appalling actions and that impact continues to this day.

“I sincerely hope today’s outcome helps provide a degree of closure for them.”

Restraining orders were made to protect each of the victims. In addition, a sexual harm prevention order was made to restrict Winteringham’s activities when he is released from prison.  He will be on the sex offenders register for life.
