Race for Life in York is back at the Knavesmire this weekend – here’s what you need to know ahead of the event.
Whether you’re taking part or simply heading down to support, Race for Life in York is a fantastic day of fundraising for Cancer Research UK. It is open to people of all ages and abilities.
This will be the 30th year of Race for Life and participants will receive an exclusive medal to mark the milestone.
Race for Life York will take place at the Knavesmire on Sunday 2 July, with the first event taking place from 9:30am.
There will be four races throughout the day, and participants can take part either as an individual or in a group. You can go at completely your own pace – whether that’s walking, jogging or running.
The start line is on the Knavesmire, and you can use what3words they.zebra.drop to find the exact starting point.
Parking will be available free of charge.
Depending on your race, it’s recommended to arrive between 20-45 minutes before your start time and there’ll be a live and interactive warm up session to join in with.
Participants are asked to bring their own reusable water bottles with them as there will be no bottled water provided. However, there will be water refill stations available to use.
Race for Life advises that the event is wheelchair accessible with assistance – since the event site is mainly on grass it can be uneven in places or may become boggy in poor weather conditions.
The minimum fundraising target for each race is £50.
Money raised at Race for Life enables scientists to find new ways to prevent, diagnose and treat cancer – helping to save more lives.

Race for Life in York are also looking for volunteers to step forward and help out with events. Duties would involve setting up, managing the information tent, keeping water stocks replenished, giving lots of encouragement and helping to pack away at the end.
For the Pretty Muddy race, there’s also an opportunity to be a ‘Mud Mixer’, helping to get the consistency just right for participants to crawl, wade and splash about in.
Jo Dean, Cancer Research UK’s York event manager, said: “Volunteering at Race for Life is fun, challenging and rewarding. No experience is needed. It’s a great way to connect with the community as people come together and play their part to help beat cancer.
“Our Race for Life events couldn’t happen without volunteers. Whatever time and skills people have to share, we’ve got a great role.”
