It may have been York’s worst kept secret.
But today we have confirmation that the Bay Horse on Marygate will be the home to much-anticipated new restaurant Roots York.
YorkMix first revealed in April that chef Tommy Banks was to open his second restaurant in York.
This was after his first – the Michelin-starred Black Swan at Oldstead – was named the best restaurant in the world by TripAdvisor, based on customer reviews.
Although we heard months ago that the Bay Horse was the chosen location, Tommy and his team declined to confirm it.
But recently they had dropped a few hints on social media…

Big announcement soon
Now though, confirmation has come in the form of an application for a premises licence.
Roots York has applied to City of York Council to vary the licence for the Bay Horse.
They want to serve alcohol 30 minutes later than is allowed at the moment, from 11am to 11.30pm daily.
According to the advertisement of applications, the opening hours will be 11am to midnight every day.
These would be the legal hours Roots York would be able to operate. But YorkMix understands food will be served only till 9pm.
The Roots York team posted this on Facebook earlier this month:
-
Produce will be delivered to Roots York from The Black Swan Oldstead garden daily, meaning the team at The Black Swan are pretty busy at the moment!
This weather has been fantastic for speeding up the process. Especially for the guys designing the drinks menu at Roots.
They’ve been out everyday foraging the hedgerows of Oldstead to bring the flavours of this season of Abundance to The City of York.
We’ll be making a big announcement soon.
