News, Things to do

After a hugely successful first event last September, the YorkMix Family Sunday at York Racecourse will return later this year.

The event will take place on Sunday, 4 September, it was revealed on YorkMix Radio‘s Breakfast Show this morning (Thursday).

And York Racecourse head of marketing James Brennan told Ben and Laura that a very special guest was lined up – Chase from Paw Patrol!

The children’s favourite from the hit TV show will make appearances at intervals throughout the day on Knavesmire.

The Entertainment Marquee will return containing giant inflatables and host of other free activities for the younger generation – look out for details as the raceday approaches.

The Racing Interactive Zone will offer the chance to ride a virtual racehorse, to try on racing silks, question our experts and enter a colouring competition. Elsewhere, the retired racehorses in the care of charity New Beginnings, will be waiting to meet racegoers.

‘Tommo’ – well-known broadcaster, Derek Thompson will share his knowledge of the sport. Listen out for his racing guide and be ready to say hello and see yourself on the big screens as he roams the stands.

Some highlights from last year’s YorkMix Family Sunday

Everyone under 18 years of age will be admitted free of charge into all enclosures, though the under 16s will need to be accompanied.

The racing includes record prize money for a seven-race thoroughbred card worth  £180,000.

The feature race, the Listed Garrowby Stakes now offers £60,000, an increase of £10,000 on its 2019 renewal. All races on the day will have at least £15,000 for Connections to share.

The longest established Sunday of the season sees the return of the young riders taking part in the  Pony Racing Series.

Continuing from the previous years is the popular offer of a single admission combining both the Grandstand & Paddock Enclosure with the improved Clocktower Enclosure for just £12 (booked in advance).

This will enable racegoers bringing a traditional picnic into the Clocktower Enclosure to enjoy their lunch and then cross over the track to see the horses close up in the Parade Ring and sample the facilities on the stands side.

Also, for this special family meeting, the County Stand dress code is relaxed.

Three-course Sunday lunches are being served from noon or racegoers  might want to enjoy a fresh sandwich on one of the many lawns; whatever the culinary choice, a great afternoon awaits.
