Shambles shoppers could soon enjoy a taste of authentic Italian gelato.
An empty store on the street is set to be transformed into a gelato shop, if plans are given the go ahead.
It would be opened in 46 Shambles, a Grade II listed building which was previously home to specialist stationer Paperesque.
Paperesque, which opened in 2015, closed its Shambles shop this summer.
“OMG Gelato will specialise in handcrafted artisan gelato, made using fresh wholesome locally sourced ingredients,” says the planning application.
“The key difference between us and our competitors is that the gelato is made fresh daily in front of our customers.
“No hidden kitchens, no hidden ingredients, just 100% authentic Italian-style artisan gelato.”
The man behind the shop is Ashley Smith, part of the family that created Groovy Moo in Malton and turned it into a huge success.
Ashley, the planning application says, “is a gelato chef with 20 years’ experience, training at the prestigious Carpigiani Gelato University in Bologna, Italy and the Master Academy Antonino Galvagno in Palermo, Sicily.”
Deliveries would be made to OMG Gelato “during quieter times and when necessary, through the rear entrance on Newgate”.
Under the plans, the old vinyl flooring would be removed and replaced, and the shop would be repainted with a new hanging sign added.
