If you saw two shrubs with top hats and plant pots for shoes today, don’t worry – you haven’t succumbed to heatstroke.
These are the Hedge Men – bringing some colour and fun to York city centre for one afternoon only today (Saturday, 13 August).
Looking greener than most vegetation in a parched York, the hardy perennials toured York as part of the Emergency Services Fun Day on Coney Street.
This saw members of North Yorkshire Police, North Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service, Yorkshire Ambulance Service, York Rescue Boat and the York BID Street Rangers meeting the public and giving tours of their vehicles and kit.
Carl Alsop, operations manager for the York BID (Business Improvement District), arranged the visit of the Hedge Men, with the help of the Fabrication shop on Coney Street.

He told YorkMix: “The Hedge Men are here as part of the community day, which is a joint forces operation with the ambulance, the fire service, police and rescue boat.
“It’s a way to try and tackle anti-social behaviour on a Saturday afternoon, and to show that the city centre is very much still for families on a weekend.”
The Hedge Men are touring York – with breaks to cool off and be watered! – until 4pm so catch them while you can!
